Focus Areas

The BPO is currently focused on dialog and advocacy in the following areas that are of concern to Brookline parents. Our focus areas will change as the landscape of public education in Brookline evolves.

Academic Excellence

Brookline schools should be a place where students of all backgrounds and abilities can maximize their learning and academic potential and receive an excellent education that prepares them for college and/or the real world. This includes (but isn't limited to) ensuring that students receive differentiated instruction and support that meets each student where they are and a course offering with multiple levels offered for older students. Without this differentiation, we believe that students of all backgrounds and abilities suffer.

Financial Sustainability

PSB's ability to serve its students is contingent on the financial health and sustainability of our schools. Annual budget cuts create uncertainty for teachers and staff as well as for parents and students. BPO believes that strong financial stewardship is critical to the excellence of Brookline schools and that the recent budget cycle has eroded community trust that must be regained.

Technology in Schools

Many districts across the U.S. are looking at cell phone and smart watch access and usage by students during school hours, with some districts banning usage of devices altogether on campus. There is also debate about how best to utilize technology within the classroom - which edtech products to use, how much to use them, and for which grades and subjects. The landscape is complicated with the growth accessibility of AI-based products and their use by students.
